“Try to search ‘ergonomic keyboard’ on your browser. You will see variations, not a single type of keyboard. That is because human bodies are different. There are no single ‘ergonomic keyboard’ that could address different  size and needs.”

What is ergonomic keyboard?

First, scratch your impression on contoured, split-type ergonomic keyboards. Chances are, the term ‘ergonomic’ is being over-advertised by most keyboard manufacturers.

A keyboard is considered ergonomic if it fits your workstation setup and most importantly, fits you. The compatibility between you and your keyboard is most likely to be unique such that, there are no generic ‘ergonomic keyboard’ that would fit  every worker in your office. It is possible have a standard keyboard that fits you ergonomically, or to have an ‘ergonomic keyboard’ that does not fit you ergonomically.

How do you know if a keyboard is ergonomic?

The main goal of ergonomic-designed keyboard is to minimize wrist and hand posture deviation during typing. If you are a healthy, regular size Malaysian, you might be able to minimize your wrist and hand posture deviation simply by adjusting your keyboard position and orientation:

  1. Lay your keyboard flat.
  2. Adjust your chair’s height.
  3. Bring your keyboard closer.
  4. Adjust your armrest accordingly.
  5. Keep your elbows and wrists at neutral postures.

How your posture should look like?

Should you avoid ‘ergonomic-designed keyboard’ entirely?

No. Some ergonomic keyboards are designed to accommodate specific condition. Split-type keyboard, for example, would benefit individuals with broad shoulder because they can adjust the split distance accordingly and minimizes wrist deviation during typing.

Individuals with narrow shoulder, however, would not benefit as much from the modularity.

All in all, know your need and adjust your keyboard position accordingly. Just because you saw the word ergonomic does not make it a good fit to you.
